Ben Judah: We have fallen behind with China...

We have fallen behind with China now ahead of the West in 66 out of 74 critical technologies tracked by @ASPI_org and making huge leaps in their application. However, we do not have in Britain an effective public policy institute plugged into Westminster and Whitehall that is tracking what we need to either quickly adopt, militantly copy or stringently guard against from China when it comes to this technological revolution we are not leading anymore. This level of policy ignorance is both dangerous and unacceptable. Looking to government to fix this is has it the wrong way round. This is where major philanthropists and business leaders need to take a project to government and seek its support. The government should then incentive this to grow by tax deductible donations for donors and clear links to honours for a national priority project.

Keep telling people that migrants are the threat to their jobs, homes, culture, safety and country and eventually every political failure can be viewed through that lens. There is neuroscience behind why threat-based messaging works. Sustained stress and perceived threat can narrow attention and impair the flexible, deliberative thinking needed to weigh complicated evidence. And while everyone is looking at the migrant? They aren’t looking at who owns the wealth, why their wages stagnated, why housing wasn’t built, why public services were cut, or why Britain voluntarily erected barriers with its largest trading partner. That’s the political power of fear: Give people a visible enemy and they may stop looking for the actual causes of their insecurity.
