Liz Webster: This is profoundly alarming...

This is profoundly alarming! Transparency doesn’t mean “trust us, we’ve checked ourselves.” It means giving the public, journalists and civil society enough information to check for themselves. At a time when trust in politics is already dangerously low, Parliament should be increasing scrutiny of money, interests and influence not making scrutiny harder. Democracy isn’t just the right to vote for the people who exercise power. It’s the right to see who is influencing them once they have it. Accountability that can only be performed by the person being held accountable isn’t accountability.

I've seen this clip many times, now, and Peter Hitchens' lucidity and sincerity never ceases to resonate. He is the one sane man in a madhouse of liberals, trying desperately to get them to understand that our problems are self-made and the system we have created is destroying something not only precious but irreplaceable. Naturally, nobody understood him, and so he is not so much a posh Nostradamus but instead an English Cassandra, doing everything to raise the alarm but forever cursed to cast his pearls before swine. One can feel the desperation in his presentation. When they accuse him of, in fact, hating Britain it becomes clear that they have absolutely no idea what he's talking about. Tragic, frankly.

For businesses considering investing billions in Britain, that means more expensive imported equipment and components, higher hedging costs and greater uncertainty over future returns. Add the barriers to our largest market and years of regulatory uncertainty and ask the obvious question: Why would an international company choose Britain over an EU location offering frictionless access to a market of 450 million people? Investment follows opportunity, scale and stability. Brexit diminished all three.
