🚨 We didn’t have to worry about food safety in the same way when we were in the EU. Our food was traded within a common regulatory system with shared rules on food safety, traceability and production standards. Now British consumers can buy British Lion eggs in the supermarket but eat breakfast in a hotel, a cake in a café or a meal in a restaurant and have no idea where the eggs came from or how the hens were kept. Brexit was sold as giving us higher standards and cheaper food. Instead we’re importing increasing quantities of eggs produced to standards British farmers wouldn’t be allowed to use while British consumers frequently aren’t even told. We lost control.

Aaron Bastani: Economism is such an issue...

Economism is such an issue with the British left historically - & part of the reason for its political failures. Housing is a huge issue, certainly, but so are things like anti-social behaviour & high streets (less so, of course). And climate! Denying things like that might feel comforting, but it doesn’t make it less true. Mao, speaking about the mass line, is very good on this. From the people to the people.
